John Atack writes, “There are two kinds of authoritarians: leaders and followers.” In the church, I was taught to be an authoritarian follower. I was taught to think of complex ideas in black and white terms. I was taught to divide Christians into different groups based on relatively small differences. I was taught to think that specific interpretations regarding secondary and tertiary doctrines were authoritative and could not be questioned. Above all, I was taught to venerate unaccountable leaders and dismiss any misgivings I may have about their beliefs or behavior. No wonder 80% of white evangelicals voted for Trump. We had been trained all our lives to support people like him.
