“Listening trap” — what a great phrase! I had never heard it before. I’ve been in a couple situations in which I’ve lacked formal authority and/or power in an organization but have been “listened to” by the higher-ups without receiving any indication whatsoever they are taking seriously anything I am saying. But from the outside, it looks like they were really patient and eager to hear my thoughts.
