There’s so much in that video. Christian Nationalism (“our country’s going down the tubes”), purity culture (“think of the men”), Christian pop-psychology (“you’ll never be pretty enough”), etc… A laundry list of white evangelical popular cliches that get applause in churches and eye-rolling rejection on a beach out beyond the walls of a church.

As a Christian myself, I think Jesus does speak to the deepest anxieties of human existence in every time and culture, and I think the women in the video deal with these anxieties like everyone else. But the issues Mr. Dorn presented, and the context in which he presented them, meant nothing to these women and probably felt more like a moralistic attack than anything else.

What’s most troubling is Mr. Dorn didn’t seem aware of how his message was coming across, and kept going.

At the same time, I feel for the guy. This is a learning experience. “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” by Jon Ronson might be a helpful book for Mr. Dorn in a time like this.
